Assign a 'nopicmip' shader key to every grate texture. (QuakeLive does that, for example). The purpose of this is to prevent some minor bugs (such as them getting invisible with picmip+no texture comression) as well as preventing some grey *mostly* opaque surfaces

Please do note, this could also have undesirable effects... I would personally dislike this inconsistency for grate textures, and would much prefer a slightly transparent texture, but I don't use picmip because it's ugly anyway
