The patent situation is known, however applies only to our build system (non commercial, so royalty free), graphics cards and possibly graphics drivers. DarkPlaces only shuffles the data around. Also, S3TC is not required, as we have a patent free fallback software decoder in darkplaces. On our build system we could alternatively use the patent free S2TC compressor which is compatible (but

slightly lower quality) and thus get rid of any patent issues, should our use no longer count as non commercial. So the costs are zero, and the benefit is way faster loading speed than with a JPEG build.
